The 20 yard container in Lakewood
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we often end up — it is one of the most popular sizes for projects in Lakewood, and the go-to choice for residential and light commercial jobs. It handles a whole-home cleanout, a kitchen or bathroom renovation, a roof, a landscaping project or light demolition without being so tall that loading turns into a chore. It holds about six pickup truck loads, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags.
It is about 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits comfortably in most residential driveways, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand.
Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, boxes and general junk from a whole house; drywall, wood, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches and shrubs from a big landscaping job — these are 20 yard jobs. Tell us the roof size and we help estimate the weight before delivery.
It is also a good box for light demolition and mixed construction debris — framing, doors, windows. If a Lakewood building permit is involved, check the recycling rule first: new buildings, additions and remodels over 2,500 square feet, and any building demolition, need a waste management plan, labeled containers on site for recyclable materials, and hauler or recycling center receipts before the certificate of occupancy or final inspection (Lakewood Code §14.02.040(J)). The City names asphalt, concrete, cardboard, untreated wood, metal and reusable architectural salvage, and wants weight tickets as proof. Tell us when you book and we plan the loads around it. If most of the load is concrete or tile, a smaller box may be more cost-effective.
What the 20 yard includes
Flat-rate pricing that includes delivery, pickup, the standard rental period with extension options, and disposal within the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — with no hidden fees. Shingles, tile and wet landscaping debris are the loads that get heavy, so consider weight as well as volume, keep very heavy material like concrete or soil for a smaller box, load evenly, keep it below the top edge, and tell us when you book if you think you will go over.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home cleanouts
- Multi-room renovations — drywall, wood, cabinets, flooring
- Roofing projects
- Large landscaping — branches, shrubs, yard waste
- Light demolition — framing, doors, windows
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, dirt or tile (use a 10 or 15)
- Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus truck access
- Asbestos, paint, chemicals, fuel, tires, batteries, medical waste or refrigerant appliances
Placing a 20 yard container on a Lakewood-area property
It needs a flat, hard spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or other paved or gravel surface, not the lawn), about 60 feet of access for the truck, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead, free of wires and branches. In Lakewood we found no City permit rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, but the code wants dumpsters on private property, on an improved all-weather surface such as gravel, asphalt or concrete, clear of vehicle and pedestrian travel and the sight triangle (§8.14.025(D)), and not on landscaping or grass (§9.80.020(B)(5)). The street is different: a temporary roll-off in the public right-of-way needs a no-charge Public Way permit before it is placed, is allowed only when there is no suitable location on the property, and may stay no more than 30 days unless the City extends it (§8.14.028). On state highways such as West Colfax, Sheridan Boulevard and Wadsworth Boulevard we found no CDOT permit path for a temporary container. Other cities have their own rules — Denver issues its street permit only to the container company, Edgewater never allows dumpsters in alleys, and unincorporated Jefferson County keeps containers in the parking lane and off arterials. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. You can put boards or plywood under the container for extra protection. Each town page covers its own code.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Lakewood driveway?
In most — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs about 60 feet of access and 25 feet of clear space overhead to set it down. Put it on the driveway or another hard surface, not the lawn: Lakewood wants dumpsters on an improved all-weather surface (§8.14.025(D)) and does not allow them parked on grass or landscaping (§9.80.020). If there is truly no suitable spot on the property, a Lakewood street placement needs a no-charge Public Way permit first and can stay up to 30 days unless the City extends it (§8.14.028). Driveway first.
What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?
Most rentals include about three to four tons, depending on the material. Shingles, tile and wet landscaping debris are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.
How long is the rental?
Most rentals include a standard rental period, typically 3 to 7 days, and you can extend it for an additional fee if the job runs on. If it fills early, ask for a swap; if you finish early, call and we pick it up early.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Often. Same-day or next-day delivery is available in many areas depending on availability, and the 20 yard is one of the most popular sizes for same-day delivery. Call early in the day for the best chance. Near homes we deliver Monday to Saturday between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., outside the holidays Lakewood lists, because the City's noise code bars trash-truck loading and unloading within 300 feet of homes at other times (§9.52.130).
