The 30 yard container in Lakewood
The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 — the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural pick when a job makes a lot of bulky debris but the site has no more room: a multi-room or full-home renovation, an estate or move-out cleanout, an office or retail remodel with shelving, fixtures and partitions, light demolition, or a community or property cleanup. It suits most residential driveways and commercial locations, and it holds about nine pickup truck loads, or roughly 170 to 190 standard trash bags.
The sides are six feet high, so most of what goes in is carried or thrown rather than tipped from a wheelbarrow. Contractors with a crew do not mind; a homeowner working alone may prefer a 20 and a swap.
Big renovations, cleanouts and commercial remodels
Taking several rooms back to the studs fills a 30 in a hurry: the cabinets, the doors, the drywall, framing and flooring. Estate and move-out cleanouts land here too — furniture, mattresses and household items — and so do office and retail remodels with shelving, fixtures and partitions, and light demolition with doors, windows and lumber.
Knocking a building down takes paperwork before it takes a dumpster. Colorado requires the area to be inspected for asbestos by a Colorado-certified asbestos inspector, and a demolition notice filed with the state health department (CDPHE) ten working days before demolition starts — even if no asbestos was found, and homes included (Air Quality Control Commission Regulation 8). In Lakewood, any building demolition also needs a demolition waste management plan under the City's recycling rule (§14.02.040(J)). We will ask what the building is before we quote.
Weight, swaps and long jobs
About four to five tons — 8,000 to 10,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Tile, shingles and concrete can reach that before the box looks full, so separate heavy material where you can and consider both volume and weight. Jobs that run for weeks usually go on a rotation: we pull the full one and bring a replacement, so the site never waits. Contractors can ask about ongoing service and scheduled rotations.
Suitability
Is the 30 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 30 yard for
- Multi-room and full-home renovations
- Estate and move-out cleanouts
- Office and retail remodels — shelving, fixtures, partitions
- Light demolition — doors, windows, framing
- Community and property cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, dirt or tile — a smaller box is safer and more cost-effective
- Small cleanouts (you would pay for unused space)
- Sites without room for a 22-foot container and the truck
- Asbestos, paint, chemicals, fuel, tires, batteries or medical waste
Placing a 30 yard container on a Lakewood-area property
It needs a flat, hard spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or gravel pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of access for the truck, and about 25 feet of clear space overhead, free of wires and branches. In Lakewood we found no City permit rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, but the code wants dumpsters on private property, on an improved all-weather surface such as gravel, asphalt or concrete, clear of vehicle and pedestrian travel and the sight triangle (§8.14.025(D)), and not on landscaping or grass (§9.80.020(B)(5)). The street is different: a temporary roll-off in the public right-of-way needs a no-charge Public Way permit before it is placed, is allowed only when there is no suitable location on the property, and may stay no more than 30 days unless the City extends it (§8.14.028). On state highways such as West Colfax, Sheridan Boulevard and Wadsworth Boulevard we found no CDOT permit path for a temporary container. Other cities have their own rules — Denver issues its street permit only to the container company, Edgewater never allows dumpsters in alleys, and unincorporated Jefferson County keeps containers in the parking lane and off arterials. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. You can put boards or plywood under the container for extra protection. Each town page covers its own code.

30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Is a 30 yard too big for a house?
For a normal cleanout, often yes — a whole-home cleanout is usually a 20. For a renovation that strips several rooms, or a whole estate, no — that volume arrives faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly which it is.
Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?
Yes. Once the container is full we schedule pickup or bring a replacement, and contractors with ongoing work can set up scheduled rotations at the start.
How much weight is included in a 30 yard?
Most rentals include about four to five tons, depending on the material. A 30 full of tile, dirt or concrete can go past that well before it reaches the top edge, so we estimate heavy loads with you before delivery.
Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?
On your own driveway or lot in Lakewood we found no City permit rule for a roll-off — the City's permit is for the public right-of-way. Keep it on a hard, all-weather surface, not the grass (§8.14.025(D)). A Lakewood street placement needs a no-charge Public Way permit, applied for through the City's eTRAKiT system before the container goes down; it is allowed only when there is no suitable spot on the property, and for no more than 30 days unless the City extends it (§8.14.028). On state highways such as West Colfax (US-40), Sheridan Boulevard (SH-95), Wadsworth Boulevard (SH-121) and US-6, work in the right-of-way needs both a state and a City permit (§12.04.040(A)), and we found no CDOT permit path for a temporary container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own rules; each town page says what that code asks for.
