The 15 yard container in Lakewood
The 15 yard is the step up from the 10 when the job is one big room rather than one small one, and one of the most versatile sizes we run. Kitchen and bathroom remodels are the classic fit — cabinets, countertops, fixtures, tile and the drywall behind them — and so is a carpet or flooring change-out, a garage, attic or basement cleanout before a move, a small deck or fence coming down, or a landscaping job. It holds about four to five pickup truck loads, or roughly 80 to 100 standard trash bags.
At about 16 feet long it is large enough for serious cleanups but compact enough to fit comfortably in most residential driveways around Lakewood, and the 4.5-foot sides keep loading easy. If you are between a 10 and a 20 and the stuff is light and bulky, this is usually where you land.
Kitchens, floors, decks and yards
A kitchen makes more debris than people expect: by the time the cabinets, the countertops and the drywall are out, a 10 is tight and a 15 is right. Flooring jobs are the same — carpet, laminate and tile — and tile is heavy, so watch the weight. Roofing projects fit too; tell us the roof size and we will estimate the weight before you book. Break deck and fence boards, posts and hardware down so they load flat.
Backyard jobs fit as well — branches, shrubs, green waste, seasonal cleanup, storm debris after heavy winds or snow. Keep green waste apart from household trash, plastic planters and treated lumber: a clean load has more places to go. If most of the load is concrete or tile, a 10 may be the more cost-effective call because of the weight.
Weight on a 15 yard
About two to three tons — 4,000 to 6,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Tile, shingles, concrete and wet yard waste get heavier than expected, so plan on weight as well as volume: we can estimate it from the roof size, the flooring or the yard before delivery, and for heavy materials a smaller dumpster may avoid overage fees. Spread the load evenly, keep it below the top edge, and cabinets, drywall and carpet will never get near the line.
Suitability
Is the 15 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 15 yard for
- Kitchen or bath remodel including cabinets and countertops
- Garage, attic, basement and multi-room cleanouts
- Flooring and carpet removal
- Roofing projects — shingles and underlayment
- Yard and storm debris, small deck or fence removal
Pick a different size for
- Whole-house renovation — go to the 20 or 30
- Loads that are mostly concrete or heavy tile (weight — a 10 may be more cost-effective)
- Yard waste mixed into household trash
- Paint, chemicals, fuel, hazardous liquids, tires, batteries, asbestos or medical waste
Placing a 15 yard container on a Lakewood-area property
It needs a flat, hard spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or other paved or gravel surface, not the lawn), about 60 feet of access for the truck, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead, free of wires and branches. In Lakewood we found no City permit rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, but the code wants dumpsters on private property, on an improved all-weather surface such as gravel, asphalt or concrete, clear of vehicle and pedestrian travel and the sight triangle (§8.14.025(D)), and not on landscaping or grass (§9.80.020(B)(5)). The street is different: a temporary roll-off in the public right-of-way needs a no-charge Public Way permit before it is placed, is allowed only when there is no suitable location on the property, and may stay no more than 30 days unless the City extends it (§8.14.028). On state highways such as West Colfax, Sheridan Boulevard and Wadsworth Boulevard we found no CDOT permit path for a temporary container. Other cities have their own rules — Denver issues its street permit only to the container company, Edgewater never allows dumpsters in alleys, and unincorporated Jefferson County keeps containers in the parking lane and off arterials. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. You can put boards or plywood under the container for extra protection. Each town page covers its own code.

15 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How big is a 15 yard dumpster?
About 16 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It holds around four to five pickup truck loads, or roughly 80 to 100 standard trash bags.
Will it fit in my driveway?
Most residential driveways have room for its 16 feet, and the driveway is where it should go. The truck needs about 60 feet of access and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead. In Lakewood the City Code wants dumpsters on an improved all-weather surface such as gravel, asphalt or concrete, and keeps them off grass and landscaping (§8.14.025(D), §9.80.020), so the driveway beats the lawn. The street is the fallback, not the plan: Lakewood needs a no-charge Public Way permit before a roll-off goes in the right-of-way (§8.14.028), allows it only when there is no suitable spot on the property, and limits it to 30 days unless the City grants an extension. We found no Lakewood time limit for a roll-off on your own driveway. If you have an HOA, check its covenants on containers before you book.
Can I keep it longer than the standard period?
Yes. Most rentals include a standard rental period, typically 3 to 7 days, and you can extend it for an additional fee — just call.
What is the weight limit?
Most rentals include about two to three tons, depending on the material. Dense material like shingles, tile, concrete, dirt or wet yard waste can push past that, so tell us what it is and we will help estimate it.
Can I mix different materials?
Usually, yes, as long as nothing on the not-accepted list goes in. Heavy material changes the plan, so if a lot of the load is concrete, dirt or tile, tell us and we may recommend a smaller box for that part.
