The 10 yard container in Lakewood

The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 14 feet long it is the shortest container we run, so it suits tight spots — a short driveway, a narrow pad beside the garage, a back corner of a job site. The trade-off is volume: it holds about three pickup truck loads, or roughly 50 to 70 standard 33-gallon trash bags, and cabinets and drywall fill it fast.

Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and dirt hit the limit long before a big box looks full, and the 10 includes about one to two tons. That is why heavy material is typically limited to the smaller containers — a 10 or a 15 — because of weight restrictions. Tell us what is going in and we will help you plan a load that stays inside the limit.

Small remodels, single-room cleanouts and the heavy stuff

A bathroom tear-out — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does a garage or single-room cleanout, a small kitchen job, a roofing project on a smaller roof, or a patch of concrete, tile or asphalt coming up. It works best for dense, heavy debris rather than bulky household junk.

It suits Lakewood because the City does not haul any of that for you. Lakewood does not contract with haulers on behalf of residents or provide trash service as a utility — residents and businesses set up their own collection with the hauler of their choosing. The City says bulky items can be picked up for a fee by your waste hauler or a junk removal company, and that dumping bulky waste in city alleys or on private property is illegal, and Code Enforcement does not allow outside storage of waste building materials. Anything more than a bag of scraps is what a 10 yard on the driveway is for.

The weight line on a 10 yard

About one to two tons — 2,000 to 4,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Mixed household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it below the top edge, and tell us it is coming. If the load goes over the included weight, an additional fee may apply based on the weight — we explain the weight guidelines up front so there are no surprises. Every load leaves covered or secured: Colorado law bars driving any load that can blow, drop, sift or leak off the truck, and a truck carrying trash needs a tarp, a cover or equivalent securement (C.R.S. 42-4-1407).

Suitability

Is the 10 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 10 yard for

  • Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
  • Garage or single-room cleanout
  • Roofing project on a smaller roof
  • Concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and tile within the weight limit
  • Tight driveways and limited placement space

Pick a different size for

  • A whole-house cleanout — that is a 20 or a 30
  • Bulky furniture from several rooms
  • Paint, fuel, oil, hazardous liquids, tires, batteries or pressurized containers
  • Fridges, freezers and A/C units unless the refrigerant has been properly removed

Placing a 10 yard container on a Lakewood-area property

It needs a flat, hard spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or other paved or gravel surface, not the lawn), about 60 feet of access for the truck, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead, free of wires and branches. In Lakewood we found no City permit rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, but the code wants dumpsters on private property, on an improved all-weather surface such as gravel, asphalt or concrete, clear of vehicle and pedestrian travel and the sight triangle (§8.14.025(D)), and not on landscaping or grass (§9.80.020(B)(5)). The street is different: a temporary roll-off in the public right-of-way needs a no-charge Public Way permit before it is placed, is allowed only when there is no suitable location on the property, and may stay no more than 30 days unless the City extends it (§8.14.028). On state highways such as West Colfax, Sheridan Boulevard and Wadsworth Boulevard we found no CDOT permit path for a temporary container. Other cities have their own rules — Denver issues its street permit only to the container company, Edgewater never allows dumpsters in alleys, and unincorporated Jefferson County keeps containers in the parking lane and off arterials. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. You can put boards or plywood under the container for extra protection. Each town page covers its own code.

10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?

The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Allow about 60 feet of access for the truck, a flat, hard surface to set it on, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead, free of wires and branches. Move cars, bins and equipment out of the way, and if you will not be home, mark the spot so the driver places it where you asked. In Lakewood keep it on the driveway or another hard surface, not the grass — the City Code wants dumpsters on an improved all-weather surface (§8.14.025(D), §9.80.020).

Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?

Yes — it is one of the main reasons people rent one. Heavy materials such as concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt and rock are typically limited to 10 or 15 yard containers because of weight restrictions. Spread it evenly, keep it below the top edge, and tell us roughly how much there is.

How long do I get it for?

Most rentals include a standard rental period, typically 3 to 7 days. Need longer? Call and we can extend it for an additional fee. If it fills before the job is done, we can swap it. Finished early? Call and we will arrange an earlier pickup.

Is it the cheapest option?

It is our smallest container, and we quote every job on its own rather than publishing per-size prices. Rentals around Lakewood typically range from about $350 to $750 depending on the size, the type of material, the delivery location and how long you keep it, with flat-rate pricing that includes delivery, pickup and disposal and no hidden fees. If the job grows, we can swap it for a bigger box.
